Perry’s arrival in 1853 unraveled the Tokugawa peace and created the first mass demand for working swords in two centuries. Kiyomaro, called the Masamune of Yotsuya, died on its eve; Munetsugu and Yukihide carried the boom to the end.
Gassan Unryushi Sadakazu was born in February of Tenpo 7 in Sugoshi, Inukami District, Omi Province. At the age of seven, he became the adopted son of the Osaka swordsmith Sadayoshi, who followed the lineage of Ko-Gassan, and at the age of eleven, he entered full-scale apprenticeship in smithing. In addition to a naturally high spirit of inquiry, his tireless effort and research bore fruit, allowing him to master a wide range of styles including Bizen-den, Soshu-den, and Yamato-den, excelling in all of them, and furthermore demonstrating superior skill and sensibility in toshin bori. Sadakazu, who used the go Unryushi, was a genius who radiated a particularly strong brilliance in Osaka during the Bakumatsu period.

We could not find an authenticity certificate on the seller’s listing. Japanese swords and fittings are normally papered by the NBTHK (or the NTHK). Without one, the attribution is the seller’s own assessment and has not been independently verified — treat it with caution and ask the dealer about certification before buying.
