Description

This katana by Sagami no Kami Minamoto Kuniie, active during the early Edo period (Enpo era, 1661-1673), features a shallow sori and slightly thick kasane, characteristic of the period. The blade has a beautiful muji-style jigane and a hamon with gunome交じる in notare-style. Freshly polished, it boasts excellent sharpness and is in healthy condition with almost no flaws. It comes with an antique koshirae featuring horn kashira, period fuchi, mismatched menuki, a round plate tsuba, and a black ishime saya.

Historical context

For two and a half centuries of peace the sword was the warrior’s legal badge rather than his weapon. Each great city developed its own manner, Edo’s tested strength against Ōsaka’s polished brilliance, until demand thinned in the era’s last decades.
