NihontoWatch竜義は、榎本栄一郎と言い、昭和二十六年生まれ、無鑑査湧水心貞吉の子で、初め貞義、後に竜義へ改銘、弟に貞人がいます。父と共に静岡県三島市大宮町菰池近くの工房で鍛刀、父同様、相州伝、相伝備前を得意とした名工でしたが、平成二十五年に六十二歳で亡くなっています。 本作は、寸法三尺三寸九分弱、特注による入念作の奉納大太刀、昭和六十三年(一九八八)、同工三十七歳の作です。 刀身のみで約1,400g、白鞘に収めた約2,000g、同工の作でこれだけ立派なものは見たことがありません。 小板目に板目、杢目を交えて良く詰んだ地鉄は、所々大模様に肌立ち、互の目に小互の目、湾れ、小乱れを交えた刃は、二重刃風の沸筋、細かな飛び焼き掛かり、刃中小足、葉頻りに入り、金筋が掛かっています。 この出来、寸法、スタイルからして、相伝備前の最高峰、備前兼光の重要文化財指定の太刀辺りに範を取ったものと思われますが、これだけ長大な太刀ながら、大きな欠点はありません。 本人は既に亡くなっていますので、今後本作のように状態の良いものは、中々入手困難になってくるでしょう。 特別保存がピシッと付いて、竜義の代表作と成り得る大変な大太刀です。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
