NihontoWatch永弘は幕末の雄藩である長州藩毛利家の刀工で、文政五年の生まれ(注1)。丁子乱刃の名手備前加賀介祐永門で修業し、真竜子と号し、初めは長門国萩城下に鍛冶場を設け、藩庁の移動と共に、周防国山口城下に移住している。藩庁の移動は異国の攻撃に備えるためで、文久二年七月、公武合体から尊王攘夷に転じた藩は、攘夷を決行後の諸外国からの攻撃に備えて守りを固め、砲台を備えた勝坂関門を急造している。この時、藩主毛利敬親は勝坂関門築造奉行の中谷茂十郎に、賞詞と永弘に精鍛させた短刀(注2)を下賜して忠勤を労っている。 この短刀は、室内での危機を想定して懐に備えた一振。身幅重ね尋常に、僅かに内に反った端正な姿で、両区深く、しかも刃区に生ぶ刃が残されて保存状態は極めて良好。地鉄は小杢目肌が詰み、小粒の地沸が均一に付いて地底に細かな地景が蠢き、無地風とはならずに緻密に立って晴れやかな鉄色を呈する。直刃の焼刃は純白の小沸で刃縁がきりりと締まって明るく、刃中は匂で澄む。帽子は小丸に返る。錆が浅く保存状態が良好な茎には細かな横鑢が入念に掛けられ、二字の銘字と裏年紀が神妙に刻されている。地刃きっぱりとして潔い趣の優品である。 奇麗な秋草蒔絵と秋草図小柄で装われた、懐に収め易い合口拵が付されている。 注1...『日本刀銘鑑』の明治十二年六月六日没(六四)の記述に従えば、文化十三年生まれ。しかし『防長刀工押型集』に「行年四十二才作之」の文久三年八月日紀の刀があり、文政五年生まれとわかる。 注2...元治元年五月三日紀の短刀(弊社蔵)。

Meiji: survival after the edict
The Haitōrei edict of 1876 ended sword wearing and nearly ended the craft itself. Military demand and imperial patronage kept a remnant alive, and in 1906 Gassan Sadakazu and Miyamoto Kanenori were named Artists to the Imperial Household.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
