This tanto, made by Fujita Kengo Fujiwara Nagahiro, was bestowed upon Nakatani Sadaomi by Lord Mōri Takachika in the first year of Genji (1864) for his meritorious service in the swift construction of the Katsuzaka Sekimon (barrier gate) in Chōshū. The inscription on the tang, written by Nakatani himself, details how he received this sword as a treasure for self-defense and national service. It is a historical piece that conveys the desperate efforts of the Chōshū domain and its samurai during the Bakumatsu Restoration period.
