NihontoWatchNihontoWatchTou-Bugu-sukashi Tsuba 八角形 鉄地 肉彫地透 角耳小肉 In paulownia wood box 正吉は、江戸の鍔工で初代正虎、二代正周、三代目がこの砂川正吉であります。江戸の麹町辺りに住み元治、慶応頃に活躍する。武州伊藤派に似通った風があり、小田原伊藤、江戸伊藤などの呼称が遺されております。つまり住地からの通称と考えられ、事実は同派であり「小田原住」と切った者も「江戸住」も同一人物であります。小田原派は元相州小田原に住し、後肥前唐津に移り、また下総佐倉に転じております。この伊藤派は江戸中期以後最も繁栄して、江戸鍔工の牛耳を執り、各藩の鍔工が争ってその門に入り、修行するに至りました。すなわち長州、駿河、薩摩などの作はみなその類で、この正吉もその一人と思われます。本作は、八角形の姿形に唐様(からよう)という中国の武具を肉彫地透として毛彫を加え緻密に彫っている。また、箙(弓の矢を入れる物)も変っていてどのように携帯するのか興味深いものであります。画題としては紀元前2~3世紀くらいのものと思われ、作も非常によく出来て砂川正吉の傑作の一枚と思われます。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
