NihontoWatchNihontoWatchThe Bushu Ito school flourished as tsuba specialists for the Edo Bakufu. Beginning with Masanaga as the first generation during the Genroku era, the lineage continued through the second generation Masatsune, third generation Masakata, fourth generation Masayoshi, and on to the ninth generation Masahiro and tenth generation Masataka. Among them, the ninth generation Masahiro studied under the Goto Ichijo school and used the name Kazunaga. The second generation Masatsune was particularly outstanding, a skilled craftsman who developed and perfected the Ito school's techniques. This work features hollyhock leaves arranged regularly in a circle, and while the composition pierced as a wheel design is simple, it possesses a refined, proportional beauty. By adding slight niku to each leaf and naturally expressing the veins and undulations, warmth is given to the hard shakudo ground.
