NihontoWatchWashu ju Minamoto no SADAHIRO kore wo tsukuru Forged in 1973, Work at his 51 years old 幕末から明治の月山雲龍子貞一(帝室技芸員)、貞勝、貞一(人間国宝)などの名工を輩出した月山家の勇名は、当主の力量も勿論のことながら、優れた門人に拠るところも大きい。昭和十四年、月山貞勝に入門した貞弘刀匠もその一人。備前伝、山城伝、相州伝を得意としながらも、専ら師貞勝、その子貞一の鍛刀に協力していたためであろう、自身作は極めて尠ない。 この脇差は、貞弘刀匠が得意とした相州貞宗写しの傑作(注1)。身幅が極めて広く、重ねも厚く、両区が深く生ぶ刃が残されている健全無比の姿。深々と掻かれた爪付きの棒樋、瑞雲、梵字、護摩箸も彫際の線が強く起って刀身に映えた「彫の月山」らしい出来栄え。地鉄はよく詰んだ板目肌に地景が脈々と入り、豊麗に湧き立った地沸で地肌が潤い、飛焼状の湯走りが掛かり、鉄色青く冴えて見るからに精強な肌合い。刃文は浅い湾れに互の目、中程に焼の深い互の目を配して力強く変化し、刃縁に銀砂のような沸が厚く付いて光を強く反射し、金線、砂流しが断続的に掛かり、刃中には細かな沸の粒子が充満して蒼く冴える。帽子は浅く乱れ込み、強く掃き掛けて浅く返る。舟底形の茎の仕立ては月山一門らしく極めて丁寧で製作時そのままに白銀色に輝き、銘字が神妙に刻されている。月山門の寡作の鬼才が特別の注文で精鍛した本領発揮の貴重な遺例である。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
