NihontoWatchMoto-haba (Width at Ha-machi) approx. 3.3cm Put on "Ningen kokuho Sumitani Masamine ten" catalog 隅谷正峯刀匠は、昭和五十六年四月に国重要無形文化財保持者(人間国宝)に認定された現代刀界の第一人者である。古名刀、別けても鎌倉時代の地鉄の再現に努め、昭和四十三年から二十年程の間は自家製鋼に挑み、更に時代を遡って正倉院の蔵刀等、上古刀の地鉄を研究。元号が改まった平成のある日、ふと「昔の刀は和銑から造っていた」との師桜井正幸の言葉が念頭に浮かび、銑卸しに再挑戦し、古刀の再現は鋼のみならず製法にあると強く認識。理論と実践の日々は、やがて爽やかな映り立つ地鉄となって結実したのである。 この平造脇差は正峯師が得意とした備中青江の逆丁子乱出来で、棟を真に造り、身幅広く重ね控え目に刃先鋭く仕立てられ、棒樋が掻かれ、浅く反りが付いた南北朝期らしい体配。地鉄は小杢目肌が詰み、小粒の地沸が豊麗に湧き立って地肌潤い、繊細な地景が密に働いて縮緬状に肌起ち、鮮やかに現れた映りは焼刃に感応して乱れごころを呈し、自然味がある。逆丁子乱の刃文は、焼頭が匂で尖って高低広狭に変化し、柔らかく付いた小沸で刃縁が明るく、焼刃に伴って逆足が長く射し、葉が浮かび、細かな金線、砂流しが掛かり、匂が充満した刃中も明るい。帽子は乱れ込んで先突き上げて小丸に長めに返る。未だ白銀色に輝く茎には、銘字が堂々と刻されている。古作への想いを胸に日々精進した正峯師の、その到達点が示された優品(注)である。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
