Description

It has arrived, it has arrived—a yari by Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke, who was highly praised as the "Shinto Ichimonji." His father was the first generation Kawachi no Kami Fujiwara Kunisuke, a disciple of Kyoto Horikawa Kunihiro. Osaka was called the "Kitchen of the World," housing the kurayashiki where rice from daimyo across the country was collected, and the market price of rice was determined in Osaka. Because of this, it flourished greatly as an economic center. Regarding Osaka Shinto, the first generation smiths gathered in Osaka from all over the country, worked through hardships to master their respective techniques, and built the foundation for the development of swordsmiths. Then, the second generation smiths in Osaka were all skilled masters who produced excellent work, raising the fame of Osaka Shinto to its peak nationwide. This blade is by the second generation Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke, who is honorifically called "Naka-Kawachi" because he falls between the first and third generations. He is a magnificent and famous master smith of the Osaka Shinto era, alongside his contemporaries Sukehiro and Shinkai. He is a swordsmith who stands in the lineage of Sukehiro's masters. Furthermore, because of his magnificent choji-ba hamon, he is called the "Shinto Ichimonji." This yari was made during the Kanbun era of the Edo period (around 1660) (363 years ago) as a self-defense yari for a samurai to use indoors. Its sugata shows a sharp hira-sankaku form. As you can see, the jigane does not appear very clearly, but it shows itame-hada with masame-hada and is well-forged. The horimono is skillfully done, featuring sharp, layered yahazu-bori as seen here, filled with shu-urushi (red lacquer) to make the carving appear even sharper. The hamon is fired in a nioi-deki sugu-cho style. Having received this on consignment from an old collector who wished for it to be passed down to the next generation at a low price, we are offering this yari by the second generation Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke—a representative smith of Osaka Shinto—at a special bargain price. Please enjoy it.
