The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This modern katana by Akamatsu Taro Kaneteru, a smith of the Akamatsu Taro school, features a distinctive jigane from traditionally smelted tamahagane. The blade exhibits a finely forged ko-itame hada and a beautiful juka-choji hamon. It is lightweight, well-balanced, and in outstanding condition, making it ideal for iaido.
