The decoration consists of flowing karakusa scrolls and stylized leaf forms, enhanced by fine engraving ( kebori ) and arranged in a balanced composition around the central seppa-dai. The combination of dark iron, warm brass inlay and openwork is characteristic of the Heianjo tradition of Kyoto , an important center of refined sword-fitting production. The scrolling vegetal motif reflects a decorative vocabulary widely used in Japanese art, valued for its elegant rhythm and association with continuity and vitality.
