A fine Yagyu Tsuba from the collection of Mr. Nick Nakamura. This tsuba was published in the 11th Kokusai Tosogu Kai catalogue in 2015. It is accompanied by custom fitted double kiri bako and a hand-made box cover. There is a washi paper sleeve for the tsuba with Mr. Nakamura's calligraphy. The kiri-bako also has Mr. Nakamura's calligraphy on the inner lid as well as Mr. Nakamura's collection seals. Please enjoy Mr. Nakamura's description below from the KTK publication. (book not included) A characteristic of bamboo is that when it bends it will return to its original form. This tsuba typifies the motif that expresses a secret teaching of Yagyu's "Art of War Strategy". This motif is also seen on the tsuba which is mounted on the famous Genyasai koshirae, nicknamed the "Kagotsurube" that is illustrated in various books including the Murase Gennai Zufu (Book of Illustrations by Murase Gennai). The niku (relief) of the carving is shallow and from the mimi (outer edge) to the seppa-dai, the plate becomes thinner. There is kaitae-ware (forging line) of linear form and gentle tekkotsu exposed along the edge face of mimi. The quality of the iron is excellent and the carving is soft, shallow and graceful which are the representative characteristics of early Yagyu tsuba. This is one of the top quality tsuba of the "Dai Ikki Sak" (1st period product) of the Yagyu School.
