Antique Japanese Sword Katana Usigned Hisamichi with NBTHK Hozon Certificate 【Description】 Hisamichi is a swordsmith in Yamashiro province(today’s Kyoto prefecture) in the early Edo period. He studied sword forging techniques under the master, the second-gen Iganokami Kanemichi, one of the most well-known swordsmiths in Yamashiro province. He received the honorable title of Omi No Kami(近江守) in 1661. The emperor back then gave the title of Kami to those who were excellent at sword making. After receiving this title, the swordsmith added it to his maker’s name when he signed his swords, such as Omino Kami Hisamichi. He was also known as one of Gokaji. (five most prestigious swordsmiths in Kyoto)He was allowed to inscribe a chrysanthemum emblem, which is the symbol of the Japanese emperor. His sword forging technique was so great that the emperor allowed him to use this emblem, which was quite honorable for any swordsmiths. He established the school called Ouminokami Hisamichi Ke, which played an essential role in Mishina school, a prestigious sword school in Kyoto in the Edo period. Although there is no maker’s mark on the tang, NBTHK appraised it as the sword forged by Ominokami Hisamichi based on the style, design, and other factors. This sword has a Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). 【Blade】 Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) : 63.0 cm( 24.8 inches) Curvature(Sori) : 1.0 cm( 0.39 inches) Hamon : The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process Jimon(Jihada) : visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process Nakago : Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged. 【Other Details】 Fuchi-Kashira : A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt. Flowers and arabesque patterns are designed for this Fuchi-Kashira. The vines are brilliantly arranged in a well-balanced to fill the whole. Each leaf and vine are finely carved; it shows us the maker’s careful work and his high-quality technique. Tsuka and Menuki : Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration. It is difficult to grasp the whole figure of this Menuki, but it is presumed that its motif might be a kind of plant or vegetable. It looks similar to Myoga (茗荷, Japanese ginger) or Takenoko (筍, bamboo shoots). Myoga has the same pronunciation as another word, “Myoga,” which means divine protection; therefore, this motif has been treated as a good-luck design. It is seen at shrines and temples in various parts of Japan. Also, it is quite a popular motif for family crests. Tsuba and Habaki : Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped. Yotsu-Mokkou-shaped Tsuba made from iron. The dragon is engraved on the surface. It opens its mouth widely and shows a menacing expression. Originally, the dragon is an imaginary creature that is found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. And it is a beast that is a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. At the backside of this Tsuba, you would find a kind of i
