Summary This blade has been attributed to Rai Kunizane (来国真) by the NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai), one of Japan’s most esteemed organizations for the appraisal and preservation of Japanese swords. Rai Kunizane was a distinguished swordsmith of the Rai school, which flourished in Yamashiro Province (modern-day Kyoto) during the mid-Kamakura to Nanbokucho periods. He is believed to have been either a student or the son of Rai Kunitoshi, and some sources suggest he was the younger brother of Rai Kunimitsu and the elder brother of Rai Norikuni. It is said that he was especially active duriing the Bunwa era (1352-1356 :mid Nanbokucho period). The Rai school was originally founded by Rai Kuniyuki, then succeeded by Rai Kunitoshi, and later led by Kunimitsu. Rai Kunizane’s exceptional craftsmanship and his place within this prestigious lineage establish him as one of the most respected figures in the Yamashiro-den swordmaking tradition. Yamashiro province was famous for its sword making style called YAMASHIRO-DEN. YAMASHIRO-DEN’s origin dates back to the Heian period (794 A.D), when the capital city was moved from Nara to Kyoto. The swordsmiths in Yamashiro province initially prospered by forging swords for court nobles and imperial families. Later on, they also forged swords for feudal lords after Samurai military government took control of Japan. There are so many renowned swordsmiths from this region. It is said that the founder of YAMASHIRO-DEN was Sanjo Munechika. And there are seven prestigious schools in this region. One of them is Rai school, where Kunimitsu belonged. Rai school and Aawata school are the most prestigious ones among YAMASHIRO-DEN. One of the most characteristics of YAMASHIRO-DEN is its elegant design and beautiful Jigane. This blade represents strong trait of YAMASHIRO-DEN. It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token(特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). *Please keep in mind that there are a few Kitae Kizu on the groove of this blade. Fuchi-Kashira The design of this fuchi-kashira features inaho (稲穂), or ears of rice. Since ancient times, rice has been revered in Japan not only as a staple food but also as a symbol of abundance and prosperity. It has been treated as a sacred treasure, with some believing that deities reside within each grain. The inaho motif is closely associated with Inari shrines, which enshrine the Shinto deity of agriculture and grain. As such, rice imagery often appears in shrine emblems as well as in kamon (family crests), making it a deeply familiar and meaningful design to the Japanese people. This motif may have been chosen to express a wish for a bountiful harvest and a prosperous life. There is also a little bird depicted on the Fuchi and Kashira. We assume it is sparrows (雀, Suzume). As sparrows form a flock and act among birds, the sparrow pattern represents abundant crops and prosperity. It is said this bird has been used as a motif since the late Heian period (1094-1184). Their tiny and adorable figures have attracted people for a long time. In addition, since sparrows have strong vitality, they have been considered symbols of prosperity for descendants. Tsuka and Menuki This menuki appears to depict a Japanese garden scene, a common theme in traditional landscape art. At the center of the piece is what seems to be a multi-tiered pagoda—an element frequently found in classical Japanese gardens. Such pagodas, known as tō in Japanese, are symbolic structures originally derived from Buddhist architecture. In the context of Japanese gardens, they are not just decorative elements but carry spiritual and aesthetic meaning. They represent harmony, reverence for nature, and a quiet connection to Buddhist ideals. Their inclusion reflects the garden’s role as a place for contemplation, balance, and inner peace. Tsuba and Habaki This tsuba features a decorative motif known as “hōsha-mon” (放射紋), or radiating pattern. The design consists of lines or rays that extend outward from a central point, creating a dynamic and symmetrical visual effect. Such patterns are often inspired by natural or spiritual imagery—most notably, the rays of the sun or light radiating from sacred figures in Buddhist iconography. In traditional Japanese art and design, the radiating motif symbolizes energy, vitality, and divine presence. While it can appear in religious contexts such as halos behind deities, it is also used purely for aesthetic purposes in sword fittings, textiles, ceramics, and architecture. Saya The kojiri (end cap) of the scabbard is decorated with a “Umebachi-mon” (梅鉢紋), a traditional Japanese family crest featuring a stylized plum blossom. This design consists of five circular “petals” arranged around a central circle, representing the shape of a plum flower viewed from above. The ume (plum) holds deep cultural significance in Japan. It is one of the first flowers to bloom in late winter, symbolizing perseverance, renewal, and quiet strength. Because of these associations, the umebachi crest was favored by many samurai families, especially during the feudal period. It conveys a sense of elegance, dignity, and resilience. Authentication Paper They authenticated the blade on December 4th in the 6th year of Reiwa (2024). They appraised it as Tokubetsu Hozon Touken, the blade especially worth preserving for Japanese society.
