Original Giheiya new work Higo Yatsushiro ju Nobuhiro Kanetsugu(Akamatsutaro Kanetsugu) Gassaku with Koshirae. This is the third release in our original “Revived New-Made Sword” series. Forged by the highly popular swordsmith Akamatsu Taro Kanetsugu, the blade displays a striking jūka-choji hamon. The fittings are consistently decorated with dragon motifs, and the scabbard is finished with a kojiri fitting. Light for its length and exceptionally well balanced, this is an ideal sword for iaidō practice. Shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune; broad and robust in mihaba, with torii-zori and a large kissaki. The nakago is ubu with sujikai yasurime, and the nakago-jiri is kuri-jiri. The carving is a kata-chiri bo-hi that runs off in kaki-nagashi beneath the habaki. The jigane is of finely forged ko-itame, tightly compacted into a dark-toned jigane, with abundant ji-nie. The hamon is a layered chōji pattern with abundant ashi, with streaks of inazuma visible in the ha. The bōshi is midare-komi and returns in ko-maru. 。 This sword is said to be a joint work by the swordsmiths Kanetsugu and Nobuhiro; however, it was in fact made solely by Kanetsugu. Akamatsu Taro Kanetsugu (personal name: Kimura Kanesada) lived in Futami-machi, Yatsushiro City, and learned sword forging under his father, the swordsmith Kaneshige. His younger brothers include the swordsmiths Kaneyasu and Kaneteru, and his sons include the swordsmiths Kanemitsu and Kaneyuki. The Kimura family is descended from a line of official retainers’ smiths who served the Sagara family, lords of the Hitoyoshi Domain, and as head of the family, Kanesada leads the Akamatsu Taro Kimura school. Another noteworthy feature is that he smelts his own iron and forges swords using tamahagane produced in-house. This tamahagane differs somewhat in character from that distributed by the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords (NBTHK), and gives his work a distinctive style. This piece is an original new-made sword by Giheiya, finished by our company from an unfinished blade that had long been kept in the vault of a certain sword dealer. As the blade was originally made for iaidō practice, it is extremely lightweight and exceptionally well balanced. The metal fittings of the mounting are unified in a design theme of dragons and shigami. This sword was produced as the third installment in our original “Revived Live-Blade for Iaido” series, and can be used for iaidō immediately after purchase.
