Juyo tachi are among the most historically significant blades in collecting. The tachi — worn edge-down and predating the katana — is the form in which the Koto golden age produced its masterworks, from Ko-Bizen and Ichimonji to the great Yamashiro and Bizen schools. Because so few tachi survive in original length with attribution intact, the NBTHK Juyo ("Important Sword") designation marks these as works of exceptional preservation and artistic merit — the deeply curved early blades collectors prize above almost all others.
