Many Koto-era short blades were originally full-length tachi or katana that were shortened (suriage) in later periods — meaning they may preserve the work of master smiths from centuries ago. Others were purpose-forged companion blades by the same schools and smiths that produced legendary long swords. Koto wakizashi showcase the distinctive steel and forging characteristics of ancient Japan's great swordmaking traditions.
