Description

A pair of menuki featuring two rhinoceroses carved in relief on a shakudō ground. The rhinoceroses are depicted in a unique manner, resembling a horse or ox with a turtle-like shell and a single horn, reflecting the limited knowledge of the animal in Japan at the time. These menuki are Kyo-kinko school and from the Edo period.
