Fukurokuju is the god of wisdom, luck, longevity, wealth and happiness. He is shown here with his cane in one hand and his scroll of knowledge in the other. Hotei is the god of fortune, guardian of children and the god of popularity. He is shown here with his bag that holds bounty for those who believe in his virtues. This set dates to the early Edo period. It is shakudo with gold and sliver nunome. The quality and condition of these menuki are excellent. Awarded a Tokubetsu Hozon paper by the NBTHK and accompanied by a custom fitted kiri-bako.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
