Nanban tsuba are tosogu that were popular from the end of the Momoyama period through the Edo period, characterized by designs influenced by items brought from overseas that were collectively called "Nanban" at the time. In addition to those considered to be imported goods, works produced within Japan incorporating Nanban-style designs are also known, featuring complex sukashi, continuous patterns, and decorations that evoke an exotic taste. This work is a Nanban tsuba that skillfully combines two facing ryu with karakusa patterns. The entire plate surface is treated with extremely precise sukashi, and the composition where the soryu move powerfully and dynamically through the intricately intertwined karakusa patterns is impressive; kin zogan is applied to various parts of the patterns, and since much of it remains, the vivid contrast with the tetsu-ji adds splendor to the work. Kin zogan is also applied around the mimi, revealing careful workmanship down to the smallest details. Furthermore, the kozuka-hitsuan is beautifully filled with shakudo, and the history of being modified during practical use also deepens the charm of this work; the tetsu-aji is firm and there is little midare in the outlines of the sukashi, making it an excellent masterpiece that combines the exoticism unique to Nanban tsuba with high-level hori techniques.

We could not find an authenticity certificate on the seller’s listing. Japanese swords and fittings are normally papered by the NBTHK (or the NTHK). Without one, the attribution is the seller’s own assessment and has not been independently verified — treat it with caution and ask the dealer about certification before buying.
