About the maker
Seki Yoshitsugu吉次
A great rarity has appeared. The swordsmith Yoshitsugu of Kurama, Kyoto is famous, but extant works are few; this dated Yoshitsugu is wonderful and precious. In the Muromachi period, Eisho 1st year (1504) (519 years ago), Yoshitsugu forged swords in front of the gate of Kurama-dera Temple in Kyoto, and is thus also called Kurama-Seki. Originally a swordsmith of the Sanjo Yoshinori lineage, it is believed that because sword makers were caught up in the Onin War, Yoshitsugu also moved his forge to Seki in Mino Province. During this time, he learned the Mino-den style, and after the war returned to Yamashiro to forge swords again in front of the Kurama-dera gate. This tanto exhibits a sharp hira-zukuri tanto sugata with a short nagasa and a distinct difference between the moto-mihaba and saki-mihaba. The jigane is a well-tightened itame-hada, and the hamon is finished in nioi-deki with konie, fired in a suguha style and very well executed. The aikuchi koshirae is also wonderful, featuring an aogai-mijin-nuri saya decorated with eight takamaki-e depictions of the Go-San-no-Kiri crest, adding further elegance to this tanto by Hon-Kyo Yamashiro Kurama-ju Yoshitsugu. It is extremely rare to see a dated tanto by Kurama-ju Yoshitsugu, making this a truly precious rarity. On this occasion, having received this piece from an old connoisseur with the request to pass it on to the next generation at a low price, we are offering it at a special bargain price. Please enjoy it.
