Description

It has arrived, it has arrived! A precious tanto by the Boshu-shi Keiryushi Suketsune has appeared. Suketsune was a pupil of Bizen no Kuni Osafune Kagasuke Sukenaga, who claimed to be a 56th-generation descendant of the Bakumatsu master Tomonari. His father was the swordsmith Sukenao, son of Bizen no Kuni Osafune Sukehei (who claimed to be a 55th-generation descendant of Tomonari and became a disciple of the famous Satsuma Oku Motohira). Sukenaga and Sukenao were relatives, and Suketsune was a direct lineage Bizen Osafune smith of the Bakumatsu period, succeeding the legitimate line of Bizen Osafune Sukesada that continued from the Muromachi period. Due to the Meiji Haitorei (Sword Abolishment Edict), his works are few, making this tanto exceptionally rare and precious. Signed as "Boshu-shi," it clearly indicates that in Keio 3 (1867) (159 years ago), he served as a kakae-kaji (retained smith) for the Sakai family of the Awa-Katsuura Domain, a fudai daimyo with a 12,000 koku rating. This tanto exhibits a goso (grand/sturdy) tanto sugata with a wide moto-mihaba. The jigane is forged in ko-itame hada. The horimono is masterfully executed, featuring a so-no-kenmakiryu (grass-style dragon coiled around a sword) on the omote, and bonji, gomabashi, and renge (lotus) on the ura. The hamon is a nioi-deki straight-tempered suguha-cho with ko-nie, displaying many kinsuji and niesuji within the ha, showing great spirit and skill. The koshirae is a luxurious kuro-ro-saya (black lacquer) featuring a Daruma motif on the kurigata. The tsuba is tetsu-ji (iron) with a design of cranes and plum trees, the fuchi-kashira features Daruma, the menuki features aoi (hollyhock), and the kozuka features a bird of prey. This magnificent koshirae further adds splendor to this precious tanto by Suketsune. We received this tanto from an elderly connoisseur who has cherished it for years, saying, "I have grown old, so please pass this on to someone who will treasure it at a low price." Therefore, we are offering it at a special, ultra-low price. Please enjoy this opportunity.
