About the maker
Seki Yoshitsugu吉次
It has arrived, it has arrived—a curiosity among curiosities, a wakizashi made in Kurama, Kyoto, where the hero who defeated the Heike and scion of the Genji, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, trained since childhood. This wakizashi dates to around the Meio era of the Muromachi period (1492) (532 years ago). Because Yoshitsugu forged swords in front of the gates of Kurama-dera Temple in Kyoto, he has been known since ancient times as "Kurama Seki." Originally, he was a swordsmith related to the Kyo Sanjo Yoshinori line. Due to the Onin War, which turned Kyoto into a scorched field and greatly involved the sword makers, it is believed that Yoshitsugu left the capital and took up residence in Seki, Mino Province. During this time, he studied the Mino-den style, and after the war, he returned to Yamashiro and forged swords once again at Kurama-dera. This wakizashi exhibits a graceful wakizashi-sugata with a slightly high shinogi, a difference between the moto-mihaba and saki-mihaba, and a shallow sori. The jigane is itame-hada mixed with masame-hada, showing much chikei in the ji. The hamon is nioi-deki with ko-nie in a suguha style, mixed with a single point of togari-ba, displaying the characteristics of the Seki-den. It is extremely rare to see works by Yoshitsugu of Kyo Yamashiro Kurama Seki, making this wakizashi a very precious curiosity. Having received this on consignment from an old connoisseur with the request to pass it on cheaply to the next generation, and because there are some damaged areas on the ha, we are offering it at a special bargain price. Please enjoy it.
