NihontoWatch現代刀発展に多大なる功績を残した栗原彦三郎昭秀、相武台打の作品。 栗原彦三郎昭秀は明治12年栃木県佐野市出身の元衆議院議員で、明治から昭和の前半、日本が近代化の道を模索し、列強の狭間で揺れ動く中、国難の打開に苦闘した稀代の人物である。早くから日本刀の復興を志し、鍛錬を二代将應に学び、赤坂氷川町の自宅庭内には日本刀鍛錬伝習所を設立、笠間繁継などを師とし、日本刀学院を合わせると１５０名は下らない刀匠を育て上げた。人間国宝である宮入昭平（行平）刀匠、天田昭次刀匠等も同伝習所で槌をふるい腕を磨いた弟子たちである。自らの邸宅に大日本刀匠協会本部を置き、新作日本刀展覧会を開催するなど刀匠、研磨師、鞘師などの隆盛をはかり、廃刀令と敗戦という日本刀文化廃滅の二大危機から斯界を守り抜いた大功労者の１人である。 本作は銘文にあるとおり相武台（1937年（昭和12年）、陸軍士官学校が当時の高座郡座間村（現座間市）に移転し、同校卒業式に昭和天皇が行幸した際に天皇から同校に与えられた呼称。）に於いて鍛刀した作品で、バランスの取れた体配は美しく、地鉄、小板目肌微細によく積み、刃文、小沸出来の互の目乱れを焼き、所々乱れの頭に霞の如く金筋・砂流しを交えている景色から、得意の備前伝の作風に、相州正宗狙った働きを表現しようとした物であろうか、同氏の弛まぬ研鑽と日本刀文化復興への熱い情熱を感じさせる傑作である。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
Certifies a genuine blade worth preserving: a signature confirmed correct, or, if unsigned, an era, province, and school that the NBTHK can reliably identify.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
