This is a tanto by Gassan Sadakazu, dated Keio 1 (1865). It features a wide body, thick kasane, and a dignified form, with a straight hamon and masame hada, characteristic of the Yamato Hosho school. Sadakazu was a master of carving and revived the distinctive 'ayasugi hada' of the Gassan school, becoming an Imperial Household Artist in 1906.
