The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This is an outstanding Gendaito katana by Mukansa swordsmith Furukawa Kiyoyuki (Shinano no Kuni Kuniyuki), who is also designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Susaka City. The blade features a powerful form, finely forged jigane, and an expressive gunome-chōji hamon. It comes with a koshirae made by Mukansa scabbard craftsman Maeda-sensei, featuring Edo-period fittings, and a shirasaya.
