NihontoWatch柴田果(しばた か)は明治十七年十一月十日、秋田県雄勝郡羽後町西馬音内の生まれで、本名を柴田政太郎という。名物小夜左文字の短刀（国宝）を所持した愛刀家の柴田は佐藤重則、宮口一貫斎壽廣に就いて鍛刀技法を修得。古鍛法を研究し、筑州左、大和保昌、山城来、越中則重、備前与三左衛門祐定等を手本に鍛刀し、戦前戦後の刀界に大きな足跡を遺している。 本作は後鳥羽天皇七百年祭を記念して奉納された作品の為に用意された鉄を用いて、広田家の注文により制作されたことが銘文に残されている。流石に地鉄美しく潤いがあり、鎌倉時代の備前国、景光あたりを狙って作刀されたと鑑られる同作中の優品である。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
