NihontoWatchNihontoWatch初代忠則は清左衛門と称し名工忠重の門人で、師より伝授された鉄の熟しに長け、赤坂風の作品のみならず布目象嵌などを施した赤坂鐔工としては新趣の作品も遺している。この鐔は、西垣勘四郎に倣った、丸鉢に無造作に活けられたような桐の花枝を意匠とした作。平面的描法ながら構成に動きがあり、葉脈も複雑に入り組んでこれも動きを感じさせる要素。鉄色黒く光沢があり、指先に触れると滑らかな質感が伝わりくる。造り込みが碁石形で、透かしの切り口がシャープで陰影が鮮やかである。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
