NihontoWatchThis tanto is made by Masahira, a student of the Living National Treasure Miyairi Akihira. Crafted in 2015, it is a refined piece modeled after the famous Aizu Shintogo Kunimitsu, a National Treasure. It features a wide mitsumune, deep niku, broad mihaba, and a slightly uchizori form with a full fukura, exhibiting a dignified construction. The jitetsu is a finely forged ko-itame hada mixed with ko-mokume, densely packed with fine nie and a faint utsuri.

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
