The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
This is a katana by Sadanori, a swordsmith from Izumo province, whose real name is Kobayashi Sadatoshi. He is a modern smith who has received numerous awards at exhibitions and was designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture in 2008. The blade features a Bizen-den style choji-ba hamon, forged using the 'makuri-gitae' method with carefully selected tamahagane steel. It comes with a high-quality koshirae, making it suitable for iaido practice.
