NihontoWatchNihontoWatch室町時代、足利将軍の一族を公方に戴いた鎌倉では、相州伝を継承した廣次や次(つぐ)廣(ひろ)などの優工が活躍していた。関東の戦国時代は、享徳三年に鎌倉公方足利成氏が関東管領上杉憲忠と決裂して下総古河に拠点を構えた事に始まる。相州鍛冶は、太田道灌や伊勢宗瑞などの名将が躍動した動乱の渦中にあっても尚、上質の刀を鍛造して他国の武将からの声望が高く、永正頃の次廣は若狭武田氏に招かれ、小浜に移住したのであった(注1)。 この刀は、永正七年二月一日の特別の裏年紀が刻された相州次廣の入念作で、身幅が広く重ねも厚く反りの高い中鋒で、茎が短く片手打に適した、まさに戦国武将好みの一刀。地鉄は小板目肌が詰み、地景(ちけい)が密に入り、小粒の地沸(じにえ)が微塵に付いて沸映りが立ち、澄み冴えた刀身の差表に不動明王の梵字と剣が、裏には多聞天と大日如来の梵字重ね彫と護摩箸が映えて見事。刃文は焼高い丁子に小互の目、角がかった刃、尖りごころの刃を交えて逆がかり、飛(とび)焼(やき)が激しく配されて皆(ひた)焼(つら)の様相となり、匂(におい)口(ぐち)締まって明るく、小形の金線と砂流(すなが)しが微かに掛かって足と葉(よう)が盛んに入り、刃中にも細かな沸の粒子が充満して冴え、激しくも華麗な構成となる。帽子は沸の粒子で満たされて殆ど一枚。刀身を包む沸の粒子が昂然と輝いて凄まじい氣を発しており、相州本国(注2)の実力と貫禄が歴然と示された傑作刀となっている。 特別保存刀剣鑑定書(若狭) 注1...他にも廣賀が山城、さらに伯耆へ移住。簀戸國次一門が紀州に相 州伝の技術を伝えている。 注2...作風は相州本国物そのもので、茎の浅い勝手下がりの鑢目、栗尻 の形、そして銘形は「相模・明応ころ」とされた『刀剣銘字大鑑』 の作例と酷似している。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
