NihontoWatchNihontoWatch平安城鐔は京都で発達した鉄地に真鍮象嵌を施す一群で、草花や唐草を透かしと取り合わせ、黒い鉄肌に真鍮の柔らかな金味を際立たせた装飾性に特色があり、室町後期から桃山・江戸前期にかけて盛んに製作されました。 本品は上下に真鍮象嵌の鉄線花と蔓を配し、切羽台の左右を蕨手状に大きく透かし、花と唐草、外周に巡る真鍮象嵌とともに、古雅な鉄地の中へ華やかで均整の取れた植物文様を展開しています。 鉄地を厚く取り、左右を蕨手状に大きく透かしながら切羽台と耳を太い太い縄目状の曲線で結び、花弁には真鍮の面象嵌、蔓と透かしの輪郭には細い線象嵌を施しています。耳に巡る撚縄状の真鍮線と各部の細かな象嵌が画面を統一し、長い年月を経た鉄の黒褐色と真鍮の柔らかな金味がよく調和しています。 江戸前期頃の作と考えられ、厚い鉄地、広い透かし、豊富な真鍮象嵌を備える充実した一枚です。古作らしい力強さと装飾性の双方を楽しめ、平安城鐔を代表する意匠として収蔵にも相応しい品です。 鉄線花は細い蔓を伸ばし大輪を咲かせる姿が透かし文様へよく適し、本品では花弁の面象嵌、蔓の線象嵌、耳の撚縄状象嵌を使い分けることで、同じ真鍮の金色にも密度とリズムの変化を生んでいます。真鍮象嵌はほとんど抜けを見せず良好な状態を保ち、花や蔓から耳の細かな装飾まで一続きに楽しめる点も大きな魅力で、黒い鉄と落ち着いた真鍮色が織り成す古雅な華やかさを存分に味わえます。
