Edo was the sword’s age of connoisseurship: the Hon’ami appraisers, the shogunal register of famous blades of 1719, and a thriving literature turned the sword into an object of study even as it ceased to be drawn in war.
This katana, unsigned and attributed to the late Edo period, features a standard shape with average width and thickness. The blade exhibits an itame hada with ji-nie and a hamon that is primarily suguha with a gentle notare, intermixed with gunome in places. It comes with a koshirae including an iron tsuba with chrysanthemum and cherry blossom carvings, iron fuchikashira with dragon motifs, a dark brown saya with inrō-bori-style finish, and menuki with floral motifs.
