Sengoku Seki was an industry: smiths organized under their tutelary Kasuga shrine, arming the war bands of central Japan. Magoroku Kanemoto’s sanbonsugi and the finest Kanesada work prove quality survived inside mass production.
This katana by Kanesada, active during the Muromachi period (Genki era, 1570-1592), is noted for its lightweight and excellent balance, making it suitable for iai, appreciation, or test cutting. The blade features a gentle sugata, a muji-style jigane with a moist appearance, and a hamon in the Kanefusa-style gunome with long ashi. It comes with a koshirae featuring antique iron fittings, a newly re-wrapped handle, and an antique openwork tsuba, all housed in a new black ishime saya. An old rest scabbard is also included.
