Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Tsuguhiro with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate 【Description】 Omi no Kami Fujiwara Tsuguhiro(近江守藤原継広) is an apprentice of the third-gen Yasutsugu(康継). His master, Yasutusu, was one of the most famous swordsmiths in Echizen province during the early Edo Period( 1661-1673 ). The master Yasutsu’s metalwork technique was so great that Ieyasu Tokugawa allowed him to engrave Mitsuba Aoi(a family crest of the Tokugawa family) on his forged blades. Tsuguhiro belonged to Shimosaka school, originally founded in Shimosaka town in Shiga prefecture at the end of the Muromachi period. And the school moved to Echizen city(Fukui prefecture) at the beginning of the Edo period. Tsuguhiro engraved the title “近江守(Omi no Kami),” and his maker’s name “藤原継広(Fujiwara Tsuguhiro)” on the front. And he inscribed where he lived “越前住(Living in Echizen)” and the school he belonged to “下坂(Shimosaka)” on the back. There was also a record where Tsuguhiro forged swords in Edo city after leaving Echizen province. Echizen Province was famous for forging razor-sharp, practically-designed swords. The Edo government, run by Tokugawa clan, ordered many blades from the swordsmiths in this province during the Edo period(1603-1868). In Echizen province, there were so many swordsmiths originally from the Mino province(Gifu prefecture), which is known as one of the five great Japanese sword styles MINO-DEN. This blade reflects on the excellent metalwork skill Tsuguhiro had. The condition of the blade is superb, and it comes with well-conditioned sword mountings. The blade is appraised as Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). 【 Blade】 Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) : 64.6 cm(25.43 inches) Curvature(Sori) : 1.0 cm(0.39 inches) Hamon : The blade pattern created by the tempering process. Jimon : Visible surface pattern on the steel Nakago : Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged. Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Sabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard). Fuchi-Kashira : A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt. Dragons are designed for this Fuchi Kashira. These dragons’ strong and divine figures are given with detailed depiction. Initially, a dragon is an imaginary creature that is found in ancient Chinese traditions or myths. This beast is a symbol of auspicious signs. Its body is likened to nine animals: antlers are deer, the head is a camel, eyes are demons, the neck is a snake, belly is Mizuchi (mythical animal in Japan which looks like a snake and have a horn and four legs), scales are fish, claws are falcons, palms are tigers, and ears are cows. It was thought that the dragon would reign at the top of all animals because of its odd-looking appearance. The dragon pattern has been appreciated as the all-purpose auspicious pattern. Tsuka and Menuki : Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration. It might be dragons that are designed for this Menuki like Fuchi Kashira. Its shape is hidden by Tsukamaki (thread which coils Tsuka). Tsuba and Habaki : Tsuba is the handguard for the Japanese Sword and Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped. Circle-shaped Tsuba made from iron. It has a symmetrical design with the Sukashi-Bori (openwork) technique. It might be an abstract design of plants. Saya : Saya is the scabbard for the Japanese sword.
