Antique Japanese Sword Katana Unsigned Harima Daijyo Shigetaka with Hozon Certificate 【Description】 This blade is attributed to the work of Harima Daijyo Shigetaka(播磨大掾重高) by NBHTK. The attribution is most likely to be given to the first-gen Shigetaka. He was one of the most renowned swordsmiths in Echizen province during the early Edo period. He was most active in sword-forging during the Kan-Ei era(1624-1645). The first-gen Shigetaka was born in Shinshu area(today’s Nagano prefecture) and moved to Mino province to become an apprentice of Kanenori(兼則). During the late Muromachi period(end of the 16th century), Shigetaka and the master Kaenenori moved to Echizen province. The smith name Shigetaka(重高) lasted 11th generations until the end of Edo period(Late 19th century). From the first-third generations, Shigetaka received Harima Daijyo, an honorable title only given to acknowledged swordsmiths. It is said that the second-gen and third-gen were as skilled as the first-gen. Echizen Province was prosperous during the Edo period, being ruled by the Echizen Matsudaira clan, a direct retainer of Tokugawa clan who ruled the Edo government. Many skilled swordsmiths moved to Echizen from different regions because of high demand among Samurai who lived there. Among them, there were many renowned swordsmiths who were originally from the Mino province(Gifu prefecture), such as Shigetaka. They are called Echizen Seki swordsmiths. This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token(保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved with artistic value. 【 Blade】 Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) : 67.7 cm(26.65 inches) Curvature(Sori) : 1.21 cm( 0.47 inches) Hamon : The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process Jimon(Jihada) : visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process Nakago : Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged. Koshirae: Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya(Scabbard), Tsuka( Handle), Tsuba(Handguard). Fuchi-Kashira : A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt. The Ume (梅, Japanese apricot blossom) is designed and inlaid with golden metal for this Fuchi Kashira. The color contrast of this gold and Fuchi Kashira’s black color makes an elegant appearance. Japanese apricot blossoms begin to bloom in winter that snow still covers its tree. Therefore, people thought this flower tells the arrival of spring. Same as cherry blossom, it has been appreciated for a long time in Japan. People enjoy its adorable petal shape and scent, gracefully branched tree, and compose many poems. As it comes out in the cold season, it symbolizes the power of perseverance and vitality. Tsuka and Menuki : Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration. This Menuki has two different designs: the Ine (稲, rice) and the Ichou (銀杏, Ginkgo Biloba). As rice cultivation has flourished in Japan, we would guess that it might also be a familiar motif for Samurais. Japanese people treat rice as an essential food and treasure it as a symbol of wealth for a long time because they believe God lives in rice. A theory says this design represents wealth and the plentiful harvest. Ichou contains lots of water; therefore, it is fire resistant. It does not quickly die even if flames burn it. Because of its strong vitality and longevity, the Ichou pattern has been considered a good luck motif. In Japan, we can often find Ichou trees in shrines. People believe it as Goshinboku (ご神木, tree
