NihontoWatch現代刀匠の最高位、重要無形文化財保持者（人間国宝）大隅俊平の特別保存刀剣指定作品。 大隅俊平（本名 貞夫 ただお）は、昭和７年太田市に生まれ、昭和27年に長野県坂城町の宮入昭平刀匠（昭和38年に人間国宝となる）に師事し、作刀技術を学ぶ。昭和33年独立し、その後「新作名刀展」において最高位の正宗賞を3度受賞、昭和63年には太田市名誉市民に推挙され、平成9年には、重要無形文化財保持者（人間国宝）に認定された。作風は一貫して直刃に拘り、特に長寸で大柄な作品を多く残した。平成21年死去。 本作は1973年（昭和48年）に執り行われた第60回式年遷宮の為に制作された御神宝の余鉄をもって注文制作された大刀（直刀）である。式年遷宮の御神宝には厳格な規格があり、１３００年の歴史をもつ最大の神事の控え打ちだけあって一点の緩みも無い清涼な鍛えには刀匠として最高の名誉に挑む俊平刀匠の並々ならぬ意気込みを感じさせる優品である。注文者の安藤純吉は群馬県沼田市を拠点に活動した実業家で、同市の注文打ちで名物刀剣などを写した優品が数多く残されており、俊平氏の制作活動を大いに支援した愛刀家として知られている。辻本直男鞘書。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
