The famous 1st generation Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, along with his father Kanemichi (who claimed to be a 9th generation descendant of Shizu Saburo Kaneuji) and his three brothers including Iga no Kami Kinmichi, accompanied the Nijo Kanpaku to the capital in February of Bunroku 2 (1593, 433 years ago). On December 7th, Bunroku 4, he received the title of Tanba no Kami. This katana is by the 4th generation Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi, known as Mishina Kichijo. He received the title of Tanba no Kami in Kanbun 2 (1662, 364 years ago) during the early Edo period. The sugata of this katana shows a wide motohaba with a distinct difference from the sakihaba, featuring a sori that creates a goso (magnificent) appearance. The jigane is a well-tightened itame-hada, forged into a powerful steel. The hamon begins with a nioideki Kyo-yakidashi in a long suguha style, transitioning into a gunome-midare mixed with sudare-ba, tempered in a wonderfully grand and exciting manner. Because Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi originally aimed for the Soshu-den style, he tempered large-patterned blades like this one, which eventually evolved into the sudare-ba. Due to its long nagasa, this katana was likely a special order (chumon-hin) from a powerful daimyo family connected to the Tokugawa house.
