(Kan'en era, During the Edo period, under the 9th shogun, Tokugawa Ieshige) Moto-haba (Width at Ha-machi) : Approx : 3cm Saki-haba (Width at Kissaki) : Approx. 1.8cm In the second year of Bunkyu, at Namamugi in Sagami Province, an incident occurred where Narahara Kizaemon—a Satsuma clansman and practitioner of Yakumaru Jigen-ryu—struck down British nationals who had crossed the procession of Shimazu Hisamitsu. This was the Namamugi Incident. In Satsuma, there existed the Yakumaru Jigen-ryu and the Togo Jigen-ryu; both are lethal sword styles characterized by the "Tonbo-no-kamae," where the sword is held high over the right shoulder before delivering a downward strike with a piercing kiai. This incident triggered the Anglo-Satsuma War. Having suffered a major defeat before the British fleet, Satsuma realized the impossibility of "Joi" (expelling the barbarians), and instead began purchasing weapons and warships from Britain, surging toward the overthrow of the Shogunate. It could be said that the curtain on the Meiji Restoration was slashed open by that single blow from Narahara Kizaemon at Namamugi.

Historical context

For two and a half centuries of peace the sword was the warrior’s legal badge rather than his weapon. Each great city developed its own manner, Edo’s tested strength against Ōsaka’s polished brilliance, until demand thinned in the era’s last decades.
