Description

The swordsmith Hidemune, whose real name is Matsubara Ryuhei, was born in Showa 5 (1930). He was a student of the 13th generation Kawashima Masahide and Nakata Kanehide. A resident of Seki, Gifu, and a member of the All Japan Swordsmith Association, he has achieved numerous awards at the New Masterpiece Sword Exhibition (Shinsaku Meito Ten). This katana was commissioned by Mr. Takagi Masateru, a descendant of the famous Takagi Sadamune, to honor his ancestor. Takagi Sadamune was the son of Soshu Sadamune (himself a disciple of the famous Soshu Masamune) who later moved to Goshu (Shiga Prefecture) and signed his masterpieces as Takagi Sadamune. This is a precious commemorative sword created by Hidemune for this purpose. The sugata of this sword features a wide motohaba and sakihaba with an extended kissaki, manifesting the Nanbokucho period style of Takagi Sadamune's era. The jigane is forged in ko-itame hada, and the horimono features bo-hi carved through the nakago (kakinagashi). The hamon is a nise-deki gunome-midare with nie, manifesting kinsuji within the ha. It is a magnificent and spirited blade that successfully captures the essence of a Takagi Sadamune utsushi. Furthermore, the togishi (polisher) applied various techniques to give the blade the appearance of a koto (old sword); these efforts are evident and the toguri (polish) itself is quite interesting. As this is the first time this sword has appeared on the market (ubu), we are offering this masterpiece Takagi Sadamune utsushi at a special discounted price. Please enjoy this famous Takagi Sadamune utsushi by the swordsmith Hidemune.

The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
