Description

It has appeared, it has appeared! A katana by Omi no Kami Kiyonobu, the soryo (head) smith of Seki, which has been carefully passed down through generations of an old family. Kiyonobu originally signed with the shomei Kanenobu; on the 18th day of the 3rd month of Keicho 16 (1611, 414 years ago), he received the title of Omi no Daijo and changed his mei to Kiyonobu. While works exist from Keicho 17 to Kan'ei 3, this sword is a precious katana bearing the nen-go of Kan'ei 3 (1626, 399 years ago), which corresponds exactly to the final year of Kiyonobu’s career. The meibun is precious; it is a witty and humorous inscription stating that he crafted this sword after viewing the high, high Yoro Falls, which drop a thousand hiro (fathoms). This meibun beautifully reflects the personality of the swordsmith Kiyonobu. This sword exhibits a shinogi-zukuri sugata with a wide moto-mihaba and a distinct difference from the saki-mihaba, with shallow sori. The jigane is ko-itame hada mixed with masame hada, with fine ji-nie attached to the ji. The hamon is a nioi-deki sugu-cho style with ko-nie, containing gunome-ba and many gunome-no-ashi and yo, creating a varied and active ha-chu. Kiyonobu was a smith of Mino from the early Edo period; the Mino Seki smiths of this era later migrated to various regions across Japan, becoming the foundation for shinto smithing. Kiyonobu’s lineage also later moved to Osaka and Ozu in Ehime, where the school flourished magnificently. On this occasion, we received this sword from an old family who has cherished it for generations. Because they have grown old and requested that we "pass it on at a low price to someone who will treasure it," we are offering it at a special, bargain price. Please enjoy this katana by Kiyonobu, the head smith of the Seki forge.
