The Enju school was founded by Taro Kunimura, who moved from Yamato to Higo during the Kamakura period. They served as the exclusive swordsmiths for the Kikuchi clan. The workmanship closely resembles the Rai school of Yamashiro, characterized by a refined and elegant sugata. The jigane is a dense itame-hada mixed with mokume, showing a beautiful and clear texture with abundant jinie and shirake-utsuri. The hamon is a calm chu-suguha based on hotsure and kuichigai-ba, with a bright and clear nioiguchi. The boshi is chu-maru with a short kaeri. The koshirae is a high-quality koshirae from the Edo period. The tsuba is made of iron with openwork (sukashi), the fuchi-kashira is shakudo with nanako-ji and autumn insect motifs in gold iro-e, and the menuki also feature insect motifs. The saya is finished in a refined black roiro lacquer. This is a masterpiece that allows one to fully appreciate the elegant style of the Enju school, which inherited the traditions of the Rai school. It is highly recommended for collectors.
