Specifications
63.6 cm
1.6 cm
2.98 cm
1.72 cm
Weight (excluding saya): 938g It has appeared! A katana by the swordsmith Sasshu-ju Masatsugu, cherished for generations in an old family estate, has finally come to light. It was crafted in February of the first year of the Genji era (1864, 162 years ago) during the Bakumatsu period. This is exactly the time when the Kinmon Incident (Hamaguri Gomon Incident) took place, where the allied forces of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Aizu Clan, Satsuma Clan, and Shinsengumi fought a fierce battle at the Hamaguri Gate of the Kyoto Imperial Palace against the Choshu army, who sought to escort the Emperor to Choshu. This katana exhibits a sugata with a short nagasa suitable for nukiuchi (quick-draw) and a noticeable difference between the motohaba and sakihaba. The jigane is a finely packed ko-itame hada that appears almost muji-fu, presenting a bright steel. The hamon is a nioi-deki gunome-midare with ko-nie. The koshirae features a kuro-ro saya, a tsuba of tetsu-ji with an itomaki (thread-wrap) motif, and fuchi-kashira and menuki with dragon motifs, adding elegance to this sword by Sasshu-ju Masatsugu. We have received this sword from an old family who stated, "We have grown old, so please pass this on at a low price to someone who will cherish it." Therefore, we are offering it at a special bargain price. Please enjoy this piece.
