Description

It has appeared, it has appeared! Based on the *mei* style of the first generation Kawachi no Kami Fujiwara Kunisuke, a wonderfully precious masterpiece has emerged from around the 19th year of Kanei (1642) (384 years ago), a period that produced *Juyo Bijutsuhin* class works. The first generation Kunisuke was the son of Kobayashi Jinbei, who was a *kinju* (attendant) to Oda Nobutaka, the third son of Oda Nobunaga. After the death of Oda Nobunaga in the Honno-ji Incident, in the 11th year of Tensho (1583) (443 years ago), Oda Nobutaka fought alongside Shibata Katsuie against Toyotomi Hideyoshi; when Nobutaka's residence at Gifu Castle fell, Jinbei was one of the 27 loyal vassals who intended to follow their lord in death. The maker of this sword, the first generation Kunisuke, was the eldest son of this loyal vassal Kobayashi Jinbei and was of samurai lineage. His native province was Ise Kanbe in Mie Prefecture, and he later entered the gate of the master Horikawa Kunihiro in Kyo-Yamashiro to become a swordsmith. Later, hand-in-hand with Izumi no Kami Fujiwara Kunisada, he moved to Osaka and became a pioneer and the founder of *Osaka Shinto*. The *sugata* of this sword shows a fine form with a difference between the *moto-mihaba* and *saki-mihaba* and a shallow *sori*. The *jigane* is a powerfully forged *Osaka-jigane* with a tightly packed *ko-itame hada* and fine *ji-nie* on the *ji*. The *hamon* displays a diagonal, rod-like *utsuri* from the base known as *mizukage*, which is said to be a habit of his master Horikawa Kunihiro; it is a spirited *notare* blade based on *suguha* in *nioi-deki* with *ko-nie*, possessing great character and splendor. Among the children of the first generation Kunisuke was the second generation Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke, known for the "Shinto Ichimonji" style, and within the school was the maker of *Saijo O-wazamono*, Soboro Sukehiro, whose son was Tsuda Echizen no Kami Sukehiro, regarded as the *yokozuna* of *Osaka Shinto*. He was a master who built a wonderfully magnificent lineage. However, perhaps because he was of samurai origin and did not place great emphasis on the volume of production or sales, extant works are remarkably few, making this sword extremely precious. The Edo-period *koshirae* adds further elegance to this masterpiece by the first generation Kawachi no Kami Fujiwara Kunisuke. As this is its first time appearing on the market, we are offering it at a special, ultra-low price. Please enjoy this masterpiece by the founder of *Osaka Shinto*, the first generation Kawachi no Kami Fujiwara Kunisuke.
