Description

It has appeared, it has appeared! A tanto that was handed down during the Edo period as the work of Awataguchi Toshiro Yoshimitsu—famous as one of the three greatest swordsmiths under heaven (Yoshimitsu, Masamune, and Go Yoshihiro). Awataguchi Yoshimitsu has been famous since ancient times, but his extant works are so rare they are considered phantom masterpieces. Unfortunately, in the Hozon Token kantei, this Yoshimitsu is attributed to Yoshimitsu (Tosa); however, Yoshimitsu (Tosa) is said to be a student of Awataguchi Masamitsu, and thus has a connection to Toshiro Yoshimitsu. The Tosa Yoshimitsu lineage has continued in Tosa since the late Kamakura period. Based on the mei-buri, this is a tanto by the Yoshimitsu active around the Bunmei era of the mid-Muromachi period (1469) (557 years ago). This tanto exhibits a sugata with a thick moto-kasane and slightly thinner saki-kasane, a somewhat narrow mi-haba, and no sori. The jigane is a forged ko-itame mixed with masame-hada. The hamon is a konie-deki suguha-cho tempered in an archaic style with great haki; it is truly magnificent. In ancient times, this Yoshimitsu was appraised as Yamashiro Awataguchi Toshiro Yoshimitsu, and it was likely handed down during the Edo period as such. The fact that this tanto possesses a daitsuki gin-ji kin-iroe habaki also suggests it was passed down as an Awataguchi Toshiro Yoshimitsu during the Edo period. As it has appeared in the world for the first time in an "u-bu" (raw) state, we are offering it at a special bargain price. Please cherish it as a Toshiro Yoshimitsu tanto.
