Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by Tadakuni with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate 【Description】 This Wakizashi was forged by the first-gen Shinano Daijyo Tadakuni(信濃大掾忠國) in the early Edo period(Kanei era:1624-1645 ). The swordsmith’s name Tadakuni lasted seventh generations until late Edo period(about 150 years ago). The first-gen Tadakuni was an apprentice of Dewa Daijyo Kunimichi(出羽大掾国路), whose master was Horikawa Kunihiro, one of the most famous swordsmiths in the early Edo period. Tadakuni originally forged swords in Kyoto area but moved to Inaba domain in Tottori prefecture in 1624 to serve Ikeda clan, exclusively, and he received the title of Shinano Daijyo in 1634. From generations to generations, Tadakuni served Ikeda clan. There is no doubt that the first-gen Tadakuni mastered the superb sword-forging technique. The blade is appraised as Tokubetsu Hozon certificate issued by NBTHK. This authentication paper was only given to Japanese swords, especially worth preserving by Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai(the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword). It has beautiful Midare Hamon(straight tempering line) and intricate Jihada. 【Blade 】 Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) : 47.1 cm( 18.5 inches) Curvature(Sori) : 1.6 c m(0.63 inches) Hamon: The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process Jimon(Jihada): visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process 【Other details】 Nakago : Nakago is the hilt of the Japanese sword. Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang on purpose to prevent red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, which is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged. Habaki : Habaki is the equipment to make the blade not touch its scabbard inside. It prevents the blade from getting rusty and chipped.
