Antique Japanese Sword Wakizashi Signed by 7th-gen Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi with NBTHK Hozon Certificate 【Description】 Summary This blade was forged by the 7th-gen Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi (七代丹波守吉道), who is also known as Enryoshi Yoshimichi(延陵士吉道). He signed his signature (Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi) on the front and 寛政五年六月 (June in 5th year of Kansei era:1793) is also inscribed on the back. Since this blade comes with a certificate of authenticity, we believe it was made 230 years ago. Based on other information on the tang, this blade was ordered by Mr. Ishihara. The first-gen Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi belonged to Mishina school. Mishina school’s founder was originally from Mino province, exclusively forging blades for Shingen Takeda, a famous feudal lord. Later on, he moved to Kyoto by bringing his four sons and founded his school in Kyoto. Yoshimichi was one of his sons. The first-gen Yoshimichi was known as Kyoto Gokaji(京都五鍛冶), five prestigious swordsmiths forging in Kyoto in the early Edo period. At the beginning of his career, the 7th Yoshimichi served Hamabe Toshinori as an apprentice and signed as Yoshinori (吉格). His master Hamabe Toshinori is one of the most renowned swordsmiths in the late Edo period. He had a lot of apprentices who later became famous swordsmiths, such as Kiyomaro. 7th-gen Yoshimichi and his master moved to Edo in the 8th year of Ten-Mei era(1788). And he started to sign as Yoshimichi in the first year of Kan-Sei era (1789). From 5th year of Kansei(1793), he became an Okakae Kaij of Nyuga Nobeoka domain in Miyazaki prefecture(Kyushu island). Okakaekaji is those who forged swords for exclusively one domain or feudal family. To gain this position, one needed to be highly skilled at sword forging. He received the title of Tanba no Kami in his career. The title of Kami was only given to highly regarded swordsmiths back then. He died at the age of 36. The swordsmith name “Yoshimichi” lasted many generations throughout the Edo period and the generations of Yoshimichi received Tanba no Kami title. Seventh generation Yomichi created many beautiful works, and this blade is a good example. Sukashi Bori (Openwork) One of the most distinctive characteristics of this blade is its openwork on the Shinogoji. Its shape is Kurikaraken. It is the sword that Fudo Myo-O (不動明王, acalanātha) holds with his right hand. Fudo Myo-O is one of the objects of worship in Buddhism. According to a theory, it is the incarnation of Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来, Mahāvairocana, the principal image of esoteric Buddhism). Kurikara-ken was named after its appearance that Kurikara Ryu-O (倶利伽羅龍王, dragon) is winding around the sword. It is believed Kurikara-Ken could cut off worldly desires: Sandoku (三毒). Sandoku is the three fundamental human desires; Ton (貪, greed), Jin (瞋, anger, grudge), Chi (癡, delusion, complaint). The other side shows Sanskrit letter, which symbolizes Fudo Myo-O. This blade is appraised as a Hozon Token (保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK(Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, well preserved and high quality with artistic value. *Please keep in mind that there is partial black rust on the Mune right above the Habaki area and the tip of the blade. Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle.
