説明

Antique Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kunimasa with Tokubetsu Hozon Certificate 【Description】 This blade was signed by Oshu Uda-gun Nakamura Ju Kunimasa (奥州宇多郡中村住国正) during the Genroku era (1688-1704: Mid Edo period), according to NBTHK’s appraisal. Oshu (奥州) is another name for Mutsu province, which refers to the region that is today’s Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, and Aomori prefectures and part of Akita prefecture. And Uda-gun Nakamura was a castle town that existed in the northern part of Fukushima prefecture. He resided in this area when he forged this blade. Kunimasa became an Okakaekaji of the Soma clan in this area, which flourished from the late Sengoku period (Warring State period) to the Edo period. Okakaekaji is a swordsmith who exclusively forged blades for a specific clan or domain. Also, during the Genroku era, there was another swordsmith named Kunimasa, who is known as Omi no Kami Minamoto Kunimasa (近江守源国正) and also signed Oshu Uda-gun Nakamura Ju Kunimasa, in this region. Omi no Mamoru Minamoto Kunimasa, whose real name was Bunemon. He was originally from Nakamura in Oshu province and later moved to Edo to become an apprentice of Yamashiro no Kami Hidetoki (山城守秀辰). Hidetoki belonged to the Tokuin school in Seki in Noshu province (today’s Gifu prefecture), his native region, and he was an apprentice of a renowned swordsmith called Masatsune in Owari province (today’s Aichi prefecture). Omi no Mamoru Minamoto Kunimasa is also known for having forged valuable swords of great sharpness, which were designated as Wazamono. It is appraised as a Tokubetsu Hozon Token (特別保存刀剣) issued by NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai:日本美術刀剣保存協会). This authentication paper was only given to authentic Japanese swords, especially well preserved and high quality with artistic value. *Please keep in mind that there is a scouple of Kitae Kizu and a black rust on the blade. If you like to see the detailed condition, please feel free to contact us. 【Blade】 Cutting Edge Length(Nagasa) : 73.0 cm (28.7 inches) Curvature(Sori) : 1.5 cm (0.59 inches) Hamon : The crystalline structure which forms along the cutting edge of a blade as a result of the hardening process Jimon(Jihada) : visible steel surface pattern created by folding and hammering during forging process Kissaki : Kissaki is the tip of the Japanese sword. Nakago : Nakago is the tang of the Japanese sword. Japanese swordsmiths left the black rust on the tang because it prevents red rust while the tang is in its handle. And the discoloration of the tang was created over time, and it is a great indicator for a Japanese sword specialist to estimate when the sword was forged. Koshirae : Koshirae is the mounting of the Japanese sword. There are several parts that consist of Koshirae such as Saya (Scabbard), Tsuka (Handle), Tsuba (Handguard). Fuchi-Kashira : A pair of matching sword fittings that cover the upper and bottom parts of its sword hilt. The theme of this Fuchi Kashira is the Hatou Zu (波涛図), which depicts large undulating and splashing waves. A s waves’ movements continue endlessly, the wave pattern represents eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, etcetera. Also, since tides repeatedly change the shape and terrain of rocks, some people hoped for a strong will by using this motif. People used this pattern wishing for an indomitable spirit to rechallenge time and time without giving up. Thanks to its dynamic design, this motif has been appreciated, especially for men’s Kimono (traditional Japanese costume). It is also said that warlords used wave patterns on their banners and armors, comparing the movement of battle to that of waves coming and going. Tsuka and Menuki : Tsuka is the handle of the Japanese sword and Menuki is its decoration. We assume the motif of this Menuki might be Kiku (菊, chrysanthemum). And it may be composed of several parts of the flower, such as leaves, petals or buds. A long time ago, the chrysanthemum was used as a medicine for obtaining a long life
