This katana is engraved with the name of Fujiwara Yukinaga. Yukinaga was a swordsmith of the Takada school who was active in Bungo (present-day Oita Prefecture) throughout the Warring States period. The Takata school swordsmiths prospered greatly, especially in the late Warring States period, as they became the exclusive smiths of Otomo Sorin. Incidentally, the works of the Takada school up to the Koto period are called Taira Takada, while those of the Takada school after the Shinto period are called Fujiwara Takada. Yukinaga was a swordsmith who was active during the transition period between the Koto and Shinto periods, and his works had a reputation for sharpness and were favored by warlords. This piece has a practical and sturdy construction. The kissaki is large and powerful. The well-wrought itame hada is packed and tight with nie notare hamon. The sword is in extremely good condition, with no flaws, dents, or spills on the blade, and the surface is very well polished, making it a very enjoyable item for viewing. This is a gem that every Japanese sword collector would want to own. The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this sword as an exceptionally valuable piece and issued a certificate of authenticity in 1973.
